The count of yarn

Release time:2025-07-16

The yarn count refers to how many spools a pound of yarn can wrap around, that is, how many strands. For example, spinning a constant 1kg of cotton into a 40km long yarn would result in 40 strands, and a 60km long yarn would result in 60 strands. The thickness of the yarn directly affects the feel, appearance, and purpose of the fabric. According to the yarn count (i.e. the weight of yarn per unit length), textiles can be divided into three categories: coarse yarn, medium yarn, and fine yarn, each suitable for different textile products.

1. Coarse count yarn (low count yarn)

Coarse count yarn usually refers to yarn with less than 18 counts, characterized by thicker fibers, higher strength, and thicker texture. Has the characteristics of wear resistance and durability.

2. Medium count yarn (medium fine yarn)

The number range of medium count yarns is between 18-28, and the yarn thickness is moderate, which not only ensures the softness of the fabric, but also has a certain strength.

3. Fine count yarn (high count yarn)

Fine yarn refers to yarn with 28 or more strands, with delicate fibers, soft hand feel, and high glossiness. Ultra fine yarn with over 80 threads can even weave silk like luster and lightweight texture, commonly seen in luxury brand clothing.

The choice of yarn thickness directly affects the style and purpose of the final fabric, and yarns of different counts together constitute a rich and colorful textile world.
